Just going to throw this out there... everyone is talking that streaming is the way of the future and physical media is dead,, but with the Future of gaming seeming to be releases, remakes, and copy catting... what exactly is supposed to get me to spend money for things I won't actually own, or too even care about this next generation of "consoles".
There have been only a handful games to get me excited in the last 5 years and it is getting to the point where I can't justify $400-$600 for a console.. and If your talking a streaming only console.. then that should be $50 or less and then what ever the Yearly/monthly subscription is gonna cost. .. but it would have to give me something worth the cost and I just don't see it.
It's a great topic for discussion, one that I have put a lot of time into thinking about. For me, I'd say if the network setup works flawlessly, the price is right, and the convenience is there, I could see it taking off. But there are a LOT of hurdles to overcome before we get there. It's the future for sure, just a matter of when, not if, IMHO.
Was the steam box not the first attempt at this? And we know how that went. But this is a stay tuned moment.
Personally i'm not interested in this type of gaming model... I might be alone here but I will not pay $60 for a rental game.
I believe OnLive was one of the first like a decade ago, but it depends on what you consider streaming tech - the Sega channel did it way back on the genesis, hell there were even attempts at t with the Atari 2600. All way before the modern tech caught up with their intentions. It's getting closer... and if anyone COULD pull it off with the resources and infrastructure, it'd be Google.
Oh man... I forgot about the sega channel
I'm not really down with the streaming games to console thing, just don't feel it can work well here in NA, unlike in countries like japan that are smaller and have more stable internet. We're gonna need an overhaul on our internet here in the US if we're ever going to have that reach its true potential and become the new standard.
I just don't see it happening any time soon, even with all the big talk from Stadia...
