Sony Unveils a More Compact PS5
As we edge closer to the holiday season, gaming aficionados are buzzing with excitement over the latest announcement from Sony. The brand recently dropped the news of launching a smaller version of the PlayStation 5 (PS5), and the gaming community is abuzz. Here's a deep dive into what this means for players and the industry.
Sony Unveils Compact PS5 Slim
According to Sid Shuman, the Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, the new model of PS5 has seen some significant reductions. It's been compacted in volume by over 30% and has also seen a weight drop by 18% to 24% when compared with the previous versions.
Sony's emphasis on aesthetics continues with the new model's design – it boasts of four separate cover panels. The top half gleams with a glossy finish, and in contrast, the bottom exudes a matte look.
More Storage and Flexibility
Not only is the design more compact, but Sony also offers more storage with a 1TB SSD, which will be included in both the PS5 and the Digital Edition, compared to the original PS5 that came with an 825GB drive (and around 667GB of accessible space). What's particularly interesting is the option for gamers to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to the PS5 Digital Edition later on. This addition can be purchased separately for a price of 79.99 USD, which offers players the flexibility to upgrade their gaming setup as per their needs. This is a fantastic way to go and honestly, I'm surprised it's not how they launched it initially.

The new model is slated to hit the shelves in the U.S. starting this November, with a global rollout in the months to follow. Once the inventory of the existing PS5 model is exhausted, this new variant will be the only one available for purchase.

According to Sony, the attention to detail shines through with the inclusion of a horizontal stand accompanying the new PS5 model. Additionally, a separate vertical stand, compatible across all PS5 models, will be available for purchase.
